The interpreter puts their own personal feeling into the situation without taking into consideration what may be best for the patient based on a barrier in the nurse-patient interaction (Ray 271-284). On the other hand, the nurse may not completely understand the situation between the patient and the interpreter and may come off as annoyed because of the added-on interpretation needed in order to do their job (Ray 271-284). The nurse was not fully culturally competent when she was fully explaining the procedure and what the patient wanted to do (Ray 271-284). Because of the language barrier, the interact may have to be changed in comparison to the normal procedure where you explain everything in-depth before something is done about. This then is why this communication was not very positive because there was a lack of trust between the communication between the nurse and the patient (Ray 271-284). You have to know how to effectively communicate and not just think you’re doing everything correctly. Without communication with others, you may miss something detrimental. It is also important to make sure that communication skills are used with more than just patients but also colleagues or other health professionals. Health care is constantly focused on group interactions, which is why it is so enforced in college. These communication skills that one learns in their undergraduate education are invaluable skills that sometimes just are not fully teachable, but it is important to make sure that these skills are worked on as much as possible. Lastly, if one does not communicate in an effective manner, this then may also negatively affect the patient for a lack of transparency (Robins 73-79). It is best recommended that those who in the health care field do not switch over to a telehealth system unless they have wonderful communication skills (Robins 73-79).
