The Impact of Basketball Around The World The game of basketball was invented in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891 by James Naismith. He was born in 1861 in rural ontario, In 1883 Naismith entered McGill University in Montreal to study philosophy and theology (“Beginning”). When he was at the age of 30 he was an instructor at the local YMCA training school (“Beginning”). Under the instructions from the head of physical education at the school for christian workers, Naismith was given 2 weeks to invent an indoor game that would provide an “athletic distraction” (“Basketball”). Naismith first tried modifying football, soccer, and lacrosse for indoor play but found that the results were “either too tame or too rough. (“History”). The game millions watch today had its definite beginnings in the small town of Springfield Massachusetts, in the mind of Dr. James Naismith (“Beginning”). He set up peach baskets attached to both ends of the gymnasium balcony and used a soccer ball (“Beginning”). He soon named the game basketball, In 1891, the first game of basketball was played at what now is springfield college (“On This Day”). The game grew popular and developed over time. Cylindrical wire baskets soon replaced the peach baskets and then in 1894 basketballs were introduced to the game (“Background”). Now basketball is played in many ways and also many places.
