Right away this photo is showing Uncle Sam lecturing kids with different colored skin with the label of Porto Rico, Hawaii, Philippines and Cuba. As well as a Native American in the back reading a book upside down and an African American cleaning the window as well. It shows once again shows that American racial attitude towards other races. “Many Americans embraces a more restricted definition of nationhood. The elusiveness was evident in the pages of popular periodicals, filled with derogatory imagery depicting blacks and other lesser groups as little more savage and criminal incapable of partaking in freedom” (655). The basic question arises is America becoming a Republic or an Empire? So Americans believe in this time period that they are still better and should enforce their practices onto these other countries, but in the end Americans wanted to be “benevolent imperialism, rooted in a national mission to uplift backward cultures and spread liberty across the globe”
