Salo Mexico Religion Analysis

The composition of the scenes in which religious figures appear, also serve as a visual technique to portray religion as powerful and include it as part of the nationalistic project. In Salón México, there is a scene that shows an image of the Virgen de Guadalupe at Mercedes’ rooms. When the image of the Virgen de Guadalupe is first shot, the camera focuses on a small flower from a low angle view; later, the camera zooms out and moves the frame from left to right. The juxtaposition of the small flower to the religious image enlarges the scale of the illustration of the Virgin and highlights her potency. Moreover, the lighting from the small candle at the bottom of the image creates a feeling of hope. Furthermore, when the camera turns to focus …show more content…
Similarly Macario’s director is also careful in the composition of scenes that include religious figures such as the Devil and God in order to demonstrate their power. When the Devil appears, the camera uses a wide angle and the Devil walks in from the upper corner of the image. Later on, the camera captures the Devil from a low angle in mid and close-up shots. Throughout the time that the Devil is present, the director uses these techniques to dramatize his character and show him as a supernatural, and superior to Macario. Therefore, this enhances the idea that religious characters are powerful beings that operate “over,” or beyond a human level. On the other hand, though Gavaldón shoots God at an eye-level angle throughout the time, God is positioned at a higher altitude than Macario. This portrays God as superior to Macario while at the same time, understanding and friendly: an emotion often associated with God in the Catholic religion. The directors’ way of portraying religious figures enhances the importance of religion and reinforcing the role of the Virgin and God as the saviours thus, contributing to the expansion of Catholicism through the film

Andrea Pozzo’s masterpiece of religious art, Triumph and Apotheosis of Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1691-1694), is a large ceiling fresco that depicts numerous religious figures, including the Holy Trinity and Saint Ignatius. Pozzo utilizes foreshortening, an optical illusion technique, that causes an object or distance to appear shorter or closer than it actually is. This technique is what gives the piece depth and makes the audience think that they are looking into the Heavens themselves. Pozzo managed to turn a flat surface into a round dome and impart a sense of physical, and therefore mental, order. This type of foreshortening is not an easy concept to display.…

The Devil has been portrayed in thousands of stories, shows and movies. How this character appears varies from story to story. Some show the Devil as a red man with horns, others as a normal person. “Young Goodman Brown”, which portrays the Devil as the later, is about how everyone is sinful, while “The Man in the Black Suit”, which portrays the Devil as more of the former, is about how the Devil comes for us all. While both “Young Goodman Brown” and “The Man in the Black Suit” show the danger of Devil like figures, they both have different risks involved, demonstrating that stories with similar antagonists can still have very different themes.…

Political parties and the electoral systems used in Mexico have had a significant impact on the legitimacy of the government. Nonetheless, the PRI’s one-party rule in all branches of government showed absolutism for many years prior to the 21st century. Through democratization and reforms, legitimacy has increased with the rise of opposition parties within the government. At first glance, we assume that Caravaggio has intentionally diminished the luminescence of the Divine figure of Christ, and chose to represent Him in a very human and less mystical form. Instead of a grand halo, we see a modest light encircling His head, and the greater draw is towards His posture in calling the saint-to-be, Matthew. But there are other elements that may suggest Divinity – for instance, the great beam of light shining through the window casts a forceful presence and unnatural spotlight on Levi (Matthew). The light itself may be significant in spiritual symbolism as there is no shadow projected behind Levi, rather, his whole face and upper body are shown to be illuminated by the presence of the Christ1. The Christ remains…

When photographer Luján Agusti first moved to Mexico from her native Argentina, she was immediately struck by the myriad religious festivals taking place throughout the year. “Religion is everywhere,” she says.
