The illuminati thought this law wasn’t going to initially affect them but just under a year later the duke issued arrests for members of the illuminati. In the process of arresting the members, the Bavaria found evidence to use as a basis for accusing them of going against religion and state. In August 1787, the duke issued a third law that imposed the death penalty on any illuminati member. A year later and the bavarian state finally considered the illuminati dismantled.
Their legacy, however, fuels many conspiracy theories. Weishaupt was falsely accused of helping to plot the French Revolution. The illuminati has also been accused of plotting events such as 9/11 and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Although his group has been disbanded, the illuminati's lasting contribution may be the idea behind many secret societies that linger in today's
