Patriarchy in Friends
Gender and sexuality are considerably dominant elements in our society today and tend to effect a large amount of the media that we watch. These two ideas tie into the ideology of patriarchy while much of our media does as well. The hit television series of the 90 's, Friends, specifically the episode "The one with the Criticism" implicitly advances this ideology of patriarchy through traditional gender roles, hegemonic femininity, and the objectifying of women through treating women as instruments of male pleasure and to-be-looked-at-ness.
Starting from the mid-20th century, traditional gender roles have dominated the United States and have seemed to never vanished. These traditional gender roles usually consist of the men being the "breadwinner" of the family while the mother was in charge of cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children. While the gang is playing their game of football an attractive women approaches that catches the eye of both Joey and Chandler. Since Joey and Chandler both want this women, they then start to compete and fight over her to decide who actually gets her. By doing this, they are treating this women not as a women but more as an object or instrument for their own pleasure. Women should not be portrayed as an object or prize but as an actually human being. Female objectification also takes place in this episode through the concept of to-be-looked-at-ness which is the idea of women wanting to be used as an object. Phoebe demonstrates this when she constantly tries to distract the men from the game by flashing them her breasts and body. She is using her body as an object to fluster the men and win the
