Identity Crisis
Jasmine by Bharati Mukherjee details a story about the identity alteration of a Punjabi girl from India. The protagonist of the novel, Jyoti, conveys the story from her point of view when she is 24 years old. At the time she is pregnant with Bud Ripplemeyer’s baby. Jyoti narrates the novel through flashbacks and retellings of her experiences. She tells the story of her experiences in America as she becomes her own individual. When she arrives to America, Jyoti is eager to become her own person. Prakash was a young and ambitious engineer.who was a follower of notion that males control the household.When Jyoti and Prakash first speak to each other , he says, “[Jyoti] is a woman of fine sympathies…” (Mukherjee 74). Prakash perceives Jyoti as a follower of her society, and assumes that she follows her family’s wishes and societies restriction on women’s rights. Prakash wanted Jyoti to become a new person, and he wanted her to forget her past. Jyoti says that Prakash “gave me a new name : Jasmine”(Mukherjee 29). The change in her name from Jyoti to Jasmine indicates a change in identity. She sheds the skin of her past life on the village, and embraces this new life with her husband. Her marriage to Prakash was just the beginning of the new life she had created. After Jyoti was given this identity, she “took care of her husband’s driving ambition”(Stalin). Jasmine realized that she could prove the astrologer wrong if she continued this life.After taking on the name Jasmine, her and her husband sought to move to America to start a new life, and to further Prakash’s education. Their dream was cut short when her husband was murdered by Khalsa terrorists when they were about to leave. The incident caused immense grief upon Jasmine, however she continued her journey to America. Jyoti decided that she would “ go to America and commit Sati after reaching the campus of the University
