Assignment after assignment would pile up in my homework folder till the night before they were due. As the teacher would hand out the sheet, I wouldn’t even look at it I’d just put it right into my folder, hoping it was a joke that I didn’t actually have to write. Writing has always been a struggle to me. Creating ideas, brainstorming has never come easy. I could never connect with my writing, forced to put words on the paper about a topic I had no interest in. I always felt as if writing was a punishment, because to achieve the end it was always a personal torture.

He wrote “A Way of Writing” discussing his definition of a writer, someone who uses a process to achieve an end result. For an end result, a creation that comes from confidence, stray impulses with trust, and find patterns are from a satisfying result. Stafford’s personal process involves being receptive, and willing to fail. He doesn’t insist on high standards, ideas do not have to be important significant, or consistent. Stafford believes in the freedom to create or discover, that in the end it somehow all makes sense. He also agrees that the “skills” of writing creatively are not mechanics, but a continuous process we all have which is needed to do. Most of what Stafford writes amounts too much, but it gets him to communicate something to himself.
Relating to Stafford, we all use processes in our writing each one different from each other. I always thought I never had a process until exploring my process through this assignment realizing I do the same thing every time an essay or an assignment is due. After reading Stafford’s piece of work, I realized I needed to stop being so hard on my work and just release my thoughts on the paper, to stop worrying about the techniques used and take more of the freedom to write.
