Schaie’s Theory explains early adulthood with the Achieving Stage, where adults apply the knowledge they learned to real life situations. According to William Perry, in the early stages of early adulthood, especially if a person has gone through college, a person will have a prominent transition from dualistic thinking to relativistic thinking. Dualistic thinking is when there is always a correct answer to a problem, while relativistic thinking is the ability to understand that there are grey areas and varying perspectives on situations and issues, and also that those perspectives vary from person to person. Going through college also benefits a greater sense of self, improved moral reasoning, greater interests in humanities and the arts, and a greater tolerance and appreciation for diversity. All of these things benefit a person and give more satisfaction and appreciation for other cultures and the way it can affect one’s self if one travels abroad in their early adulthood (Troop-Gordon, 2015). Happiness and emotional stability is derived from feelings of independence, competence, self-esteem, or relating well to others (Feldman, 2010). Adults in the United States experience more satisfaction from experienced relating to the self and self-esteem (Feldman, 2010). Travelling may seem about the material things superficially, but once the person starts exploring, they soon realize that travelling satisfies something inside that cannot be met by material things. Early adults will feel independent, maybe for the first time if they are in their twenties. They will feel competent that they were able to navigate a country that might not speak their native language, boosting their self-esteem. They will be able to relate better to others, especially to those who are from elsewhere. The feelings and emotions that travelling stirs up will likely be some of the happiest memories for the person.
Early adulthood is the best time to travel abroad because the body is in good physical health; they are seeing the world from a new perspective and appreciating new cultures and arts. They are socially able to meet new friends and preserve them. Emotionally, they will appreciate the experiences more deeply. Every aspect of early adulthood is ideal for success in travelling
