She often uses listing in combination with line-breaks which are used to imply depth and secrecy. In Atlas, she uses this combination fairly often, specifically in the first stanza. She continuously lists to emphasise the presence of something, then uses a line-break to ‘hide’ these words from the reader, suggesting the feeling of secrecy.
Carol Ann Duffy often uses repetition in her other writing. We can see her using this in Atlas. This often causes the audience to extend their thinking by maintaining similar ideas within the poem, making it feel like a story of some sort. Duffy used, “Hero,” three times in Atlas to emphasise his heroic action done towards humanity on Earth.
