In the academic journal called Resilience in African American Children and Adolescents, there is a section on how the idea of resilience can help the youth. How resilience is defined in this journal is, it is a total combination of strength, resources, and risk factors within context, across space and time (Module 6, p. 4). The little girl that I worked with was white, but there was a wide array of races represented in the program. One of my fellow tutors had a little boy who spoke Spanish at home and sometimes at the end of the sessions they would discuss what they learned in Spanish. I worked with a program called ‘Read to Succeed’. Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon for an hour, I would work with the same little girl. We would read books, practice writing, and learn…

Along the lines of Critical Race Theory Lewis-McCoy also offers us a race-based explanation for the inequality found in the results of minority students. He observed that black children grow up seeing the race-related barriers that black adults have faced. these barriers then signal to the children that the traditional opportunity system is not open to blacks. Black youths then increase their sense of racial allegiance and solidarity. They often become disengaged from school, because they recognize school as a vehicle of mobility, but one that is exclusive to whites and not for blacks (Lewis-McCoy, 2014).…

The promotion of cultural diversity and individual difference can increase students’ self-concepts whilst developing respect and understanding for all people. By placing a value and acknowledging mutual respect for all individuals, avoidance of racial stereotyping begins, it also enables racist comments and misconceptions to be replaced with factual information (Craven, 2011). By providing educators with greater understandings based on fact and truth empowers…

Tentative Hypothesis: Birdie McGreavy Throughout the article Resilience as Discourse, author Bridie McGreavy (2016) characterized the existing understanding of resilience, as well as took a turn in the conversation and constructed new avenues of thought. Across McGreavy’s (2016) introduction she skillfully introduced the current state of knowledge regarding resilience by means of verbs such as “positioned”, in an aim of noting the bereft existence of comprehension. McGreavy’s (2016) identification of questions unanswered by the existing understanding of the subject allowed her to then create space and extend the conversation, through statements such as “to address these questions, I investigated”.…

Inequality in Education We live in a world with many problems that seriously need to be addressed. As a college student today, it sometimes seems that every issue is on the brink of destruction to the greater population. Today, you hear of many political, social, economic, and environmental issues that seem to be too large and complicated of a task for all of us to really come together and fix. This is mainly due to the widespread mindset of our culture and how we choose to either recognize or not recognize something that isn’t right in the world, and thus a shift in our thinking is required to make the necessary change.…

She begins by letting the reader know statistics about the number of employees who suffer from mental health issues, how it effects the workplace, and their productivity at work. She goes on to state that "Researchers question why some can survive difficult situations and become stronger while others become depressed. "(Harrington,2012) "Where there's a will, there's a way."…

The Glass Castle: The Longest Simile to Resilience Human resilience is defined in Elizabeth Edwards ’s quote, “Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it 's less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you 've lost, or you can accept that and try to put together something that 's good.” It has exemplified itself repeatedly throughout our existence on Earth, from the harsher, simpler days of survival, or how nations have fallen to dust after war or plagues or poverty and yet glued themselves back together in blatant refusal of defeat, or the struggle of the modern-day individual fighting through financial disasters or emotional loss.…

A review of race socialization within black families by: Chase L. Lesane-Brown • White races don’t really introduce the different races that are in the world to their children instead they tend to stick to the race they are only. • Black families teach their children about their own race first and let their children be around other races that teach them the difference within them. • However, once children grow the way they see race may differ or the people they get along may change as well. • Children tend to get along with the people their parents get along with say a child of color mom gets along with a woman that is white then the children may get along well with classmates that are white too because of the positive interaction the child sees from their guardians.…

Consistently finding others ways, such as humor, violence, performance, attention etc., to compensate for their inhibition. Although these cultural aspects do are not a major conflict with my own race, as an educator, one needs to be sure to can set their own biases and beliefs aside, get to know each individual student and their cultural differences, build trust and compassion for each student and develop a curriculum around the cultural heritage of races that make up each student cultural population. Not researching and understanding the cultural differences can be a detriment to these students and have a negative impact on their academic and behavioral development. References: Craig, J. (2016)…

The statement that “Adversity is one thing we all experience at one point or another,” is quite correct. All people that live or have lived have suffered the pains of adversity. However the continuation of the statement is not as precise, not all “Texts dealing with adversity are moving portraits of people who are great examples of resilience.” This is because texts dealing with adversity can only show resilience in a limited number of forms, therefore in these texts resilience is shown as black and white, not as the many shades of grey it actually is. This can be observed in the texts “the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” by Mark Haddon, which follows the protagonist Christopher Boone as he tries to solve the mystery of the…
