In Shakespeare’s Othello the idea of love and manipulation of false feelings is an important factor ???. Shakespeare allows the audience to view love in its best and worst forms. Throughout Othello the thematic representation of self-love, brotherly and romantic loves are clearly visible. Through the interactions of the characters, love decides their fate.
Compassion and feelings of humanity among the characters Iago and Roderigo, Desdemona and Emilia and Cassio and Desdemona in Othello propel a sense of brotherly love. The idea of false love is prominently shown through the short term relationship of Cassio and his mistress Bianca. Iago is able to manipulate this relationship against Cassio by informing Othello “… how he prizes the foolish women your wife! She gave it to him. And he hath giv’n it to his whore” (4.1.194-96). Though the handkerchief was not given directly to Cassio by Desdemona, it was given to Bianca by Cassio to make her happy. Cassio was unaware of who it belonged to. By causing the confusion about the handkerchief between the two sets of couples, Iago is able to manipulate their feelings to set his plan into action. Iago and Emilia’s romantic relationship is a ploy for Iago to do his destructive work. Emilia loves her husband and would do anything for him. She retrieves Desdemona’s handkerchief and he takes it from her which causes her to protest "If it be not for some purpose of import, / Give 't me again: poor lady, she 'll run mad / When she shall lack it" (3.3.316-318) knowing that the handkerchief means a lot to her friend, Desdemona. Emilia has been manipulated by Iago numerous times into doing his work but she never fights against him because of her undying love for him which eventually causes her downfall.
