In Shakespeare’s Othello the idea of love and manipulation of false feelings is an important factor ???. Shakespeare allows the audience to view love in its best and worst forms. Throughout Othello the thematic representation of self-love, brotherly and romantic loves are clearly visible. Through the interactions of the characters, love decides their fate.
Compassion and feelings of humanity among the characters Iago and Roderigo, Desdemona and Emilia and Cassio and Desdemona in Othello propel a sense of brotherly love. This brotherly love that is shown throughout the play in many ways includes negative repercussions. Throughout the play Roderigo puts trust into Iago to guarantee that Roderigo would be with Desdemona. Using his manipulative words, Iago proposes an offer to Roderigo “if thou hast that in thee indeed which I/ have greater reason to believe now than ever” (4.2.45-6) which he cannot refuse. By Iago initiating these actions Roderigo is under the impression that by killing Cassio he will be able to be with Desdemona. Iago’s hidden plan is to have Roderigo kill Cassio so he can obtain the title of Lieutenant he thought he deserved. The brotherly love shown between Iago and Roderigo is a false love which ultimately leads to death of Roderigo by Iago for his own greater good.
