Altruism is helping others above all else, thinking of others before thinking of oneself. Haigh (2010) states the definition of altruism as the unselfish attention to the needs of others. (Haigh, 2010, p. 1402) Where does the concept of altruism come from? Is it something that is born, taught, or created through experience? Nursing students all enter with the thought or idea of helping others and we see many that eventually forget that passion. Experiences on the floor that nursing encounters can either assist to reinforce or tear down the altruism framework. Haigh (2010) believes that the framework of altruism is not necessarily just too solely help others but to ensure that the good name of nursing lives on. (Haigh, 2010, p. 1404)
