The ICU nurse’s daily tasks differ from those in other nursing units. The ICU nurse-patient ratio is 1:1 and sometimes 1:2 or 1:3. Their daily tasks are focused on the improvement of their patient. The ability to think critically is extremely important as an ICU nurse in order to recognize problems that may arise during the patient’s stay and be able to effectively implement these solutions for the best possible outcome. ICU nurses are more proactive compared to the other nurse from other units. They constantly check and interpret lab values and find ways to correct any abnormal ones. The patient is used to be homeless, but was adopted to be a church’s caretaker. Because he had recent back surgery and fractured nasal and neck injury due to fall, his pastor was not sure if it was a good idea to bring him back to the church. The pastor wanted to help the patient have a decent home, but was afraid he won’t recover there. According to him, it would be very difficult for the patient to stay in the church because nobody can take care of him especially that he needs assistance in ADL’s and in moving in general. The RN took the initiative by asking his colleagues on the possible solutions, and came up with the idea that it would be better for the patient to stay with his sister. I was able to hang IV fluids and antibiotics’ did IVPush pain meds, hourly blood sugar test, periodic VS check, and experienced doing EKG readings with the RN’s help. I also did a central line dressing change and drawn blood for lab. I performed physical assessment, provided bedbath, pericare, bowel care, and linen care. With the other RN’s patients, I was able to suction orally and had witnessed postmortem care. It was a great experience for me as a student nurse to spend a day in ICU because I was able to use all my nursing skills and was constantly learning new things.
