The Ibex and the Frog: Cloning to Save Species
Species are going extinct every day. Although new species are being discovered, losing the old ones has consequences. One method scientists are considering to keep species alive is a process called cloning. There are many misconceptions about cloning, and this paper will seek to clear up the reality of cloning extinct and endangered species. Now, we’re not going to see any dinosaurs roaming around soon, but we may help declining species bounce back. There are two controversies at the center of de-extinctive cloning: can we clone, and should we clone. Both have their own public misconceptions, but the scientific advances are great, and cloning

Well actually, cloning has successfully briefly revived one extinct species: the Bucardo. The Bucardo is a species of Pyrenean Ibex that went extinct in 1996. Celia, the last living bucardo was crushed by a tree. Immediately, scientists from France and Spain leapt in to collect some cells. These cells were nurtured and grown inside labs. Then, they did somatic cell nuclear transfer. They extracted the nuclei from the Bucardo cells, and implanted them into goat eggs. After implanting the 57 embryos in 41 mother goats, only one mother carried a clone of Celia to term. The scientists preformed a caesarean section, and brought the bucardo into the world. The first de-extinction in history. It didn’t last long. After 7 minutes, the lungs of the newborn died, leaving the bucardos extinct again. For seven whole minutes, the bucardo was no longer extinct. This took place in 2003. One decade later, the technology has drastically improved. I suspect we may be close to reviving some more recently extinct …show more content…

Cloning of animals is another possible solution to prevent or reverse endangerment of animal species in the Brazilian Amazon rain forest. According to author George Dvorsky, “Brazilian scientists have announced that they are moving ahead with plans to clone a number of endangered species, a list of animals that includes the jaguar, maned wolf, and black lion.” (Dvorsky) Having already collected the genomes of many species, the scientists state that they will clone an animal in extreme cases of extinction. (Dvorsky) Conservation Destruction has been widespread through the rainforests of Brazil, but governments have been increasingly willing to address environmental issues in pursuit of protecting the ecosystems.…

The development of cloning technology led to new ways to produce medicine and improving the understanding of genetics. Cloned animals can be used to carry human traits that could lead to new developments in medicine. Also this could lead to human cloning, but this has not been legalized so far due to people's ethics. Although this process lead to a success in Dollie’s case, there…

and it’s not that confusing. What scientist have done is they found some D.N.A. from a wooly mammoth and got they idea to make another one and they have the idea to make one by using a mother elephant to carry the egg again and once they have done that they will work on making more until they have had enough to make de-extinction. If it is not good they have also thought of bringing some birds back. There might…

As Beth Shapiro, a biologist in the University of California states, “We’re thinking about how we can use this type of technology to conserve populations that might be in danger of going extinct” (‘Sister Clones’). This may be helpful for conserving populations, but the products that are being created aren’t as…

“Through the research leading up to human cloning we will perfect the technology to clone animals, and thus we could forever preserve endangered species, including human beings,” (Smith 2). “...Scientists have been working to clone species that became extinct more recently, using DNA from well-preserved tissue samples,” (Why Clone? 2). There are many animals that are important to Earth and they are going extinct. For example, bees are considered an endangered animal and they are very important to Earth. With cloning, we will be able to clone them and populate the species so they aren't endangered anymore.…

Victor Frankenstein a fictional mad scientist may have more in common with modern day scientists than most expect; both going against nature and our humanity to create life. Cloning an idea not so long ago seemed like it was purely science fiction, but now that it’s looking more and more like an actuality, we ask ourselves should we keep it that way. Cloning animals is not only unnatural but has uncertain outcomes with a high failure rate and a high probability of diseased clones to continue the practice. Animal cloning has a significant percent of uncertainty that goes along with the process. Despite several hundred attempts and years of relentless research, more than ninety-five percent of cloning attempts results in failure (American Anti-Vivisection Society).…

As stated in the article “5 Reasons to Bring Back Extinct Animals (And 5 Reasons Not To)” by Breanna Draxler, “De-Extinction possibly will change priorities in fields of science, such as medical research.” This will not be good at all. These scientists receive billions of dollars to research for cures for cancer, HIV/AIDS, alzheimers, etc., and now they will be looking for ways to come up with extinct wooly mammoths and pigeons? Once again, this proves to be unnecessary and wrong. Scientists need to be worrying about keeping alive things actually living today rather than trying to bring back already deceased animals who lived their time on earth, and died…

The scientific advancement and the preservation of species continue to help with understanding why animals became extinct in the first place. Just as noted in the article by Carl Zimmer, “De-extinction advocates counter that the cloning and genomic engineering technologies being developed for de-extinction could also help preserve endangered species, especially ones that don’t breed easily in captivity”. The expense of cloning has been a concern. Carl Zimmer later states, “And though cutting-edge biotechnology can be expensive when it’s first developed, it has a way of becoming very cheap very fast”. If cloning can help preserve endangered species and the costs are not so expensive, then maybe it’s a win win for…

Reproductive Cloning With constant new developments in science, society is forced to react and adapt. Along with these new developments, citizens are left questioning the ethics behind the experiment. Almost one hundred thirty years ago, society was introduced to the idea of cloning. It was not until the year nineteen ninety-six when the idea became reality and the first cloned mammal was born, Dolly the sheep. She set the grounds for the next cloned mammals to come.…

According to National Geographic, the Giant Sloth, the Cuban Red Macaw, the New Zealand Giant Moa, the Tasmanian Tiger, and the Woolly Mammoth are all among the faction of species that are extinct but that could possibly be revived. In fact, a poll issued on National Geographic’s website allows users to simply and effortlessly vote for which extinct species they would like most to see resurrected. Astonishingly, scientists have actually finagled a way to potentially make this poll useful. Biological scientists have discovered a method to conceivably resurrect extinct animals from their evolutionary graves. Termed de-extinction or species revival…
