On a hillside in small Kettlepot, Arkansas there was a big abandoned farm. It used to serve the whole town with that white milk and vegetables. Fifty-one years later, it is being lived in by the grandchildren of the farmers who used to run it. A forty-two year old man and his sister share the property. They steadily were fighting over money that was getting scarce and they didn’t particularly get along. David who was the brother, always took a walk in the pasture which was heavily wooded now, before the sun set. He usually did that after him and Susie argued.

On this stroll, he felt like something was following and watching him. There was something watching him, it had been doing that since he’d started going on his walks. David started on the walk back to the house. Down there the devil is known as the “Husker”. He stepped out from behind an old oak and introduced himself. David startled, took a few steps back. The devil offered him some old money that his grandparents left on the property, but he had to make a promise first. David said he’ll give him an answer by tomorrow around this time. They parted ways, the devil disappearing right into the oak tree.

With a high pitched laugh, the Husker appeared out of thin air. David asked what was the promise? The devil said I can take care of your sister for you. If you sign her over to me you can get the money and you won’t have to share it with her, she’ll be out of your hair. Just put a couple drops of blood on this “X”. David did not like his controlling sister. She was bigger and more athletic than him, so she’d beat up on him so he didn’t care what he did with her. David did it. The devil did his high pitched laugh and disappeared

The Devil represents evil and he knows that he will bring him harm. Even though Goodman Brown seeks the Devil it is shown that he is still hesitant, saying his “father never went into the woods on such an errand, nor his father before him” and that they have “been a race of honest men and good Christians”(Hawthorne, 26). Goodman Brown, despite wanting to sin, still believes deep down that seeking out the Devil is trouble. The Devil, however, scoffs at the idea that the Browns were a good family. He has had multiple run ins with Goodman Brown 's father and grandfather, telling him that his grandfather “lashed the Quaker woman so smartly through the streets of Salem” and that his father “set fire to an Indian village, in King Philip 's War”(Hawthorne, 26).…
