The Hurt Locker Historical Points

Introduction: For my film report, I chose to watch the movie The Hurt Locker. This movie was about the Iraq war and it followed a team of men who were being targeted by the Iraqi’s. This movie not only showed us both sides of the war, but it showed us the different effects war can have on a person. The movie started out very intense and sad with the master sergeant dying which led to the group getting a new leader. None of them really liked him because he was so calm all the time, but soldiers have different ways of coping and his was being cam and secluded.

Three Important Historical Points: One historical point about this movie was the actual Iraq War. There are two parts to this war, 2003 to 2011 and 2014 to now. The wars were different, but they’re the same, too. The first war was started because the United States didn’t wasn’t Saddam Hussein in charge anymore. The war continued because we many other Iraqis tried taking over the government and we chose to stay there to make sure someone good would take over head of the country. The United States withdrew their soldiers in 2011, but came back in 2014 for the same reason as we stayed there. Many of the wrong men tried getting all the power of the government.

During the first three years of being in Iraq, about 151,000 to 600,000 were killed in combat. We also ended up winning the war, but having to come back in 2014 because the civil war in Iraq continued. The third historical point I found in this movie was about the 2003 invasion of Iraq. It was March 20th, 2003 when the United Stated sent our troops in to invade Iraq. This invasion led to the downfall of Saddam and the collapse of the Ba’athist

The Hurt Locker showcases the experiences of a United States Army bomb squad stationed in Iraq after US invasion of foreign soil. On the surface, the film is ostensibly a story based on the actual experiences of a journalist embedded with US military forces in Iraq. If audiences choose to dig deeper, there are multiple meanings that can be drawn from the storyline. Its most noticeable theme is established immediately with the film’s opening quotation, “The rush of battle is a potent and often lethal addiction, for war is a drug.” Despite the fact that war is harsh and unpredictable, those involved become habituated to these realities, and often don't know how to live without them.…

    A. What reasons do your authors give to explain the historical inaccuracies in the films? All historical movies are of peoples interpretations of the events, or if it was written from someone who were there at the time of the event it's still based off of what they seen or remember. Things can get lost in interpretation but director's I feel do try to stick to the best of there knowledge while maintaining a film that would be popular in ratings. Like James Cameron who written, directed, co-produced, and co-edited the film in 1997 of The historical event the Titanic which sunk in 1912. The movie was a great film with some inaccuracies but a nice story line to follow along with two fictional characters Jack Dawson and Rose Dewitt Bukater.…

Patton Patton is a historical drama surrounding United States General George S. Patton and his career in Africa and Europe during World War II. While I initially chose this film because it was easily available on Netflix, I came to enjoy that it focused on the war in Northern Africa and Italy, which are often overlooked in modern cinema and other mediums. The film depicts General George S. Patton, a loud mouth, no nonsense, and pugnacious general stuck in the middle of the fight in North Africa after a humiliating American defeat in the Battle of Kasserine Pass. Patton quickly realizes how poorly disciplined the American troops in North africa truly are and quickly whips them into shape. After defeating Erwin Rommel’s German-Italian Panzer…

An epigraph appearing at the start of The Hurt Locker states ‘The rush of battle is often potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug’ – Chris Hedges, this quote sets the scene for the movie as we see the negative consequences that war has on the people involved. Kathryn Bigelow has directed the two war films, The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty in which she has a very clear style which can be analysed to make meaning of the texts. Both texts explore the idea of voyeurism and are focussed on the battle that the main protagonist has with themselves and others they associate with. Kathryn Bigelow’s style includes challenging the expectations of the audience and exploring the impacts of certain war-related behaviours on relationships. When viewing The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty I applied the practice of reading for Bigelow’s style using the principle of auteur theory, this provided me…

The war on Mexico is a very controversial topic because of the events that led to the beginning of the war and the things that are going on until this day. This war not only affects Mexicans, but it also affects neighboring countries such as the United States. Many people seem to believe that the war on Mexico is going to lock down on the drugs that are being smuggled into the United States, while others see it as a way to terrorize them into giving them our drugs. The war on drugs in Mexico is a very important event that is happening, but it is leading to many lives being lost, therefore the war is going on for too long and we need to stop it.…

Even the Rain directed by Iciar Bollain is about two people, Costa and Sebastian, who make a movie regarding Christopher Columbus who sails to the Americas and how he seized the land and indigenous people who were already present. While all this filming occurs, there is the water wars in Cochabamba, Bolivia led by Daniel, an actor who was recruited by Sebastian. The water war was about how companies from overseas were controlling the wells in Bolivia and were denying access to the public, they even restricted the people from collecting rain. There are some complications in the movie because since Daniel led the resistance and is apart of the movie, both Costa and Sebastian run through troubles of getting Daniel to be quiet until the filming of the movie was over. Bollain does a parallel between the two stories and how they revolve around each other.…

Like many movies I have seen before “The Hurt Locker” begins with a quote. The quote states simply “War is a Drug.” Although not true for everyone, some find it almost impossible to return home and begin their normal lives once again. For Staff Sergeant William James played by Jeremy Renner, war was a drug, and it was as if he found pleasure while under enemy fire and defusing bombs. There are two main reasons why “The Hurt Locker” is such a standout film.…
