Once Rainsford was released into the woods,he had to think fast in order to outsmart his hunter. He started running in circles around trees and doubling back on his path to throw General Zaroff from his trail. Fortunately, he was smart enough to figure out that Zaroff already knew where he was heading. If he had not paid attention to his intuition, then he would never have survived the first day.

He knew he couldn’t keep outrunning his hunter without rest. He needed to hide so that he could get some sleep to regain some of his strength. So he carefully climbed up a tree, without leaving any marks or trail to give away his position. Another example of his tactics was that whenever he sensed that the general was near, Rainsford knew to keep very still and quiet until the hunter had passed. The last example of his problem solving capabilities was that near the end of the hunt, he was positive that he wasn’t going to make it back to the house overland.
