When Rainsford is caught in the shipwreck, he is trapped on an island and he meets General Zaroff. General Zaroff seems like a good person but is he really? After Rainsford meets General Zaroff, he seems full of delight to meet a hunter like him but he has yet to find the truth. “Game must have courage, cunning, and, above all, it must be able to reason.” Said General Zaroff. “Tonight,” said the General, “We will hunt.” Rainsford was really nervous on account of him being hunted. As Ivan drops off Rainsford near a town for the hunt, Rainsford spent two hours walking through bushes and decided to leave a trail for the General to follow. After waiting awhile, Rainsford saw a man coming his way. It was General Zaroff. Rainsford is hiding in a tree as General Zaroff slowly looks up the tree. Zaroff looks to the floor and tries to find any tracks Rainsford left. In the story, Rainsford says that the General is carrying a small automatic pistol.
