Having to change her lifestyle and the reality of discrimination towards her race. Rankine shows the struggle of African-American women like Serena Williams and how she feels un-assailable. Even though Serena is a well-known athlete, she still feels cheated and robbed because of her race. When Serena does a celebratory dance she was being called “…immature and classless” (Rankine, p.33). Having done her dance, Serena was shown the distaste society thought of her dance “the Crip Walk”. Maria made a connection towards the lack of understanding towards the religion and race. How uncomfortable other races feel towards being connected through their ethnicity and culture. Having to deal with the discrimination of society and not feeling as they are part of it makes them feel un-assimilated. This causes negative roles of assimilation within the American society.
Although there are positive aspects of assimilation, there are also negative aspects within the society. Coming from the books “Hunger of Memory”, “Citizen”, and “Passing” these authors are showing the un-assimilated side towards race, ethnicity, and the cultural backgrounds. Society’s difficulty to accustom other groups and standards these show the negativity towards assimilation.
