The character Katniss Everdeen grew up in a dirty village with little amounts of food to live off of. “District Twelve. Where you can starve to death in safety” (Collins 6). The setting in the beginning of the book is District Twelve, where Katniss lives with her small family. Basically the place is a poo hole. There’s little to no electricity, the electricity they do have is used to power an electric fence around the town to keep animals out and people in. As a type of “natural selection” kids are put into the Hunger Games. “You become eligible for reaping the day you turn 12 [...] your name is entered once [...] when your 13 twice, etc. By 18 your name is entered 7 times. But if you’re poor and starving you can put your name in for tessera” (Collins 13). In the book you have to be entered into a drawing to be potentially put into the Hunger Games. Which is essentially a giant killing spree and only one survives. Katniss is entered into the games with another contestant from her district, Peeta, and find a way for both of them to survive the Hunger Games. “I spew the berries from my mouth [...] ‘You didn’t swallow any?’ I asked him. He shakes his head. ‘You?’ ‘Guess I’d be dead by now if i did,’ I say” (Collins 346). Katniss manages to sike out the Capitol so that her and Peeta can both survive. Throughout the rest of the series Katniss is put through multiple obstacles in defeating the president of the Capitol, President Snow. She is tortured and looked into the eyes of death more than once in her life. Katniss sacrifices herself for her friends and family so that one day the people of Panem don’t have to live by President Snow’s horrible rule. In the end, she kills Snow and many other bad people who would damage the fate of Panem. Katniss and Peeta eventually get married and have kids and live in peace. Katniss
