In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, there is a briefly mentioned character who plays a large role in one of the story's ongoing themes. Peeta's father shows three traits that advance the theme of survival, but not only his. Peeta's father shows he has others best interest at heart, in this case, surviving the perils of District 12. He trades generously, is determined to work through serious problems to feed others, and is brave enough to beg Katniss to bring home a victor even if didn't outright ask because it means extra food. Peeta's dad is kind. He offers to watch and feed Prim for Katniss even with the constant struggle in District 12 to stay alive. He even told Katniss “I'll keep an eye on the girl, make sure she's eating” when Katniss was in the Justice building after the Reaping. It is as if he knows how hard Katniss works and how much she risks to feed both her family and others through trade and feels he owes her a debt for supplying his family with meat. He doesn't abuse Peeta like his mother does. Katniss states that “ I feel certain he would never have hit his son the way his wife did.” Since he didn't, Peeta only had …show more content…

He purchases food behind his controlling wife's back. He keeps quiet about it, and feeds his sons. Peeta talks about eating the squirrels one night and Katniss wonders why she never thought about Peeta eating her squirrels. Yet if it was a chance to keep him alive, then Peeta's dad didn't want to lose it. He even goes to the extent of asking Katniss to protect his son in the Hunger Games. He offers Katniss cookies as a silent plea. Before then, Katniss thinks that “these(referring to the cookies) are a luxury we can never

I was extremely excited to begin reading Mockingjay. After seeing the all of the movies, I was excited to see if the books were going to be like the movie. At this point in the book, it seems like there is not much of a difference between the two. My favorite part in Part 1 of Mockingjay is when Peeta sends a coded message to the rebels.…

The emergence of the female heroine in young adult dystopian fiction is working to change stereotypical representations of women through texts. Women are often under represented, hyper-sexualised or lack complexity in modern works, with just 23% of films distributed globally from 2010-12 featuring female protagonists according to a report released by the Geena Davis Institute. While it is true that female protagonists have been seen over time, they are all too often represented in manners that focus on appearance, their domestic roles and subservience, or emphasized femininity (Connell & Messerschmidt, 2005). Cult classics like The Hunger Games and Divergent are working to empower young women through the characters of Katniss and Tris who are…

In the Hunger Games, the most important similarities the movie shared with the book was making Peeta initiate the idea of him and Katniss being lovers. This is so significant because, without this, most of the main events in the book and movie would never have taken place. For one, this angle would have left Katniss to be just another face in the crowd, not making her stand out, which also meant fewer sponsors, decreasing her chances of survival. However, the most important reason for this is because Katniss would have left Peeta to die when he needed her the most and she would not have been able to plant the small seeds of defiance against the capital. In the movie and novel, the games take a surprising turn when an announcement goes out that…
