Katniss’s father died when she was eleven, he was working in the mine when there was an explosion. After this she was forced to support her family. Throughout The Hunger Games, Collins shows us many instances where Katniss sacrifices herself without thinking of how it will affect her in either a good or bad way. For instance, when she volunteers to take her sisters place in the games or when she changes to please Haymitch and Cinna, as well as to please the capitals gamekeeper and audience. The first place we see Katniss sacrifice herself is at the reaping. At the reaping her 12 year old sister Prim’s name is in the bowl once, this should give Prim the best chance of not being drawn but she is. Katniss reacts with, “’Prim!’ The strangled cry comes out of my throat, and my muscles begin to move again. ‘Prim!’ I don’t need to shove through the crowd…I reach her just as she is about to mount the steps. With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. ‘I volunteer!’ I gasp. ‘I volunteer as tribute! (Collins 22). This shows Katniss doesn’t for a second think about will happen to her she is only concerned with Prim’s safety. While Katniss is in the arena she is constantly running through her head the situation and whether she is on camera and how the sponsors will react to it. The first place that she really tries to play the sponsors is when she and Peeta are in the cave, “…I lean forward and kiss him, stopping his words. This is probably overdue anyway since he’s right, we are supposed to be madly in love.” (Collins 260). The reader can infer, Katniss is really kissing him not because she loves him but because her feelings are not as important to her as pleasing the sponsors is. She knows it will help get sponsors to give Peeta medication. Even after the games are over and Katniss has won she still plays the cameras,”…I take about three steps and fling myself into his arms.”(Collins 361). Collins gives the readers another hook here, the quote could be taken as easily as her actually loving him at this point, but if you look under the surface you can see she is terrified, still needing to please the gamekeeper now more than ever. She can’t let go of their strategy now it has to become their lifestyle. Once again to survive she will sacrifice her true feelings to protect herself as well as
