Sacrifice means spending less time on entertainment and more time on improving your life and family. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a layered story about a sixteen year old girl named Katniss. The story is set in the future in North America now called Panem. Panem is split in to 13 districts and the capital. The capital is home to President Snow who rules over Panem. The 13th district however doesn’t exist anymore because they rebelled against the capital and the district was turned to rubble. Every year, each district has a reaping where they choose one girl and one boy ages 12-18 to be their tributes. The tributes fight to the death in the hunger games till there is one victor to remind them of their past (civil war). Katniss and …show more content…
Katniss’s father died when she was eleven, he was working in the mine when there was an explosion. After this she was forced to support her family. Throughout The Hunger Games, Collins shows us many instances where Katniss sacrifices herself without thinking of how it will affect her in either a good or bad way. For instance, when she volunteers to take her sisters place in the games or when she changes to please Haymitch and Cinna, as well as to please the capitals gamekeeper and audience. The first place we see Katniss sacrifice herself is at the reaping. At the reaping her 12 year old sister Prim’s name is in the bowl once, this should give Prim the best chance of not being drawn but she is. Katniss reacts with, “’Prim!’ The strangled cry comes out of my throat, and my muscles begin to move again. ‘Prim!’ I don’t need to shove through the crowd…I reach her just as she is about to mount the steps. With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. ‘I volunteer!’ I gasp. ‘I volunteer as tribute! (Collins 22). This shows Katniss doesn’t for a second think about will happen to her she is only concerned with Prim’s safety. Katniss at a very young age had to take care of herself as well as her mother and Prim because …show more content…
While Katniss is in the arena she is constantly running through her head the situation and whether she is on camera and how the sponsors will react to it. The first place that she really tries to play the sponsors is when she and Peeta are in the cave, “…I lean forward and kiss him, stopping his words. This is probably overdue anyway since he’s right, we are supposed to be madly in love.” (Collins 260). The reader can infer, Katniss is really kissing him not because she loves him but because her feelings are not as important to her as pleasing the sponsors is. She knows it will help get sponsors to give Peeta medication. Even after the games are over and Katniss has won she still plays the cameras,”…I take about three steps and fling myself into his arms.”(Collins 361). Collins gives the readers another hook here, the quote could be taken as easily as her actually loving him at this point, but if you look under the surface you can see she is terrified, still needing to please the gamekeeper now more than ever. She can’t let go of their strategy now it has to become their lifestyle. Once again to survive she will sacrifice her true feelings to protect herself as well as

Throughout the book, her intelligence is exemplified with her awareness of surveillance. First, Katniss was conscious of the cameras as soon as she volunteered to take Prim’s place. Kelley Wezner says, “… Katniss equates the cameras with self-control as she struggles to contain her tears so that she will not look weak to competitors during the evening of replays of her district’s reaping” (154). I believe Katniss was smart to hold back her emotions because if she didn’t she would have looked like an easy target to the other tributes and I also believe her ability to control her emotions at such a problematic time showed her mental strength and possibly helped her gain sponsors. The second example is during the first night in the games when Katniss is hiding out in a tree and she finds out Peeta is working with the careers.…
