Sacrifice means spending less time on entertainment and more time on improving your life and family. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a layered story about a sixteen year old girl named Katniss. The story is set in the future in North America now called Panem. Panem is split in to 13 districts and the capital. The capital is home to President Snow who rules over Panem. The 13th district however doesn’t exist anymore because they rebelled against the capital and the district was turned to rubble. Every year, each district has a reaping where they choose one girl and one boy ages 12-18 to be their tributes. The tributes fight to the death in the hunger games till there is one victor to remind them of their past (civil war). Katniss and her family live in District 12 which is the coal district. Each district supplies a specific element of life to the capital. Life in the districts is not easy, everyone is very poor and most people die young due to starvation. Katniss’s father died when she was eleven, he was working in the mine when there was an explosion. After this she was forced to support her family. Throughout The Hunger Games, Collins shows us many instances where Katniss sacrifices herself without thinking of how it will affect her in either a good or bad way. For instance, when she volunteers to take her sisters place in the games or when she changes to please Haymitch and Cinna, as well as to please the capitals gamekeeper and audience.
