Video and print media are two sources at complete opposite ends of the spectrum. Persuasion in video relies upon visual and audio features to persuade its audience whereas print relies almost completely upon textual persuasion. “Look Up” by Gary Turk is a visual representation of rhetoric being manipulated to allow the designated audience to change their opinion of social media through computers, smartphones, and tablets. Turk relies on audio techniques to improve sound and visual examples to support his argument. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a novel about the political struggles after war in a country known as Panem. The author illustrates her opinions on war, income inequality, and government control through her story of a twisted …show more content…
Toddlers and old people are not usually associated with much technology, and so the targeted audience (young people) understands the issue better when someone their own age is being shown as the culprit. In one section of the video, the viewers see a group of people enjoying the view of mountains, and then in the very next second all but one are gone and that individual is looking at a cell phone, creating a “what could have been” scenario for the first scene if the woman just put her phone down- she could have been with her friends enjoying the view instead of just being by herself. Throughout the video there are many more examples of this kind of rhetoric such as a man meeting the love of his life vs. him not meeting her because he failed to notice her while because he was too busy texting on the phone. Rhetoric involving love and friendship is easy to convey- especially through video. “Look Up” currently has over 45 million views and that count is increasing every day.
