The Hunger Games: Book Vs Movie

Great Essays
Have you ever thought about how directors and producers take a powerful book such as The Hunger Games, and don’t make the movie version of it as powerful? Well, this is exactly what happened in the film directed by Gary Ross. The Hunger Games are a 24 free for all survival game, with the last man or woman standing wins. With the contestants being chosen by a card in a bowl, two participants from all 12 districts will be taken to the capitol and will prepare for the games ahead. Between the book and the movie of The Hunger Games, the book is more powerful because it has more feeling, mood, and description.

To begin, the comparison and contrasting of the book and the movie, the feeling and mood between characters are much different from the

For example, in the book, Katniss has just released the tracker jackers and has passed out in the brush, then Peeta says “ What are you still doing here?” he hisses at me. I stare uncomprehendingly as a trickle of water drips off a sting under his ear. His whole body starts sparkling as if he’s been dipped in dew. “Are you mad?” He’s prodding me with the shaft of the spear now. “Get up! Get up!” I rise, but he’s still pushing at me. What? What is going on? He shoves me away from him hard. “Run! He screams “Run!” (Page 193). With this passage, you can see how much description is used in the book. With the use of words such as uncomprehendingly and prodding, it gives the scene in the book more power and meaning than the movie. For example, when the book says “ His whole body starts sparkling as if he’s been dipped in dew,” This gives the reader a better understanding of what Katniss is seeing. This gives the book more power than the movie since it has powerful and descriptive words to bring the reader closer to the story. The movie version of this scene was not as powerful as the book. It starts with Katniss Everdeen waking up in a pile of leaves with her bow balanced against a broken down tree. Her vision affected by the poison from the tracker jackers. Then in the distance Peeta comes out and starts yelling “ Are you mad?, Run! Run!” Then Katniss stumbles in the other direction. As you can see, …show more content…
This is shown by the mood and description between the book and movie. For example, the description in the book was impactful and powerful in the book and it made a big contribution to the overall powerfulness to the story. In this scene, the Reaping was in session. Numerous kids lined up by age. It is quiet and tense, as Effie Trinket pulls out he card. The reaction of Katniss to Prim’s name being called made the book more powerful than the movie. To show this the book says,“ It's, Primrose Everdeen. One time, when I was in a blind in a tree, waiting motionless for game to wander by, I dozed off and fell ten feet to the ground, landing on my back. It was as if the impact had knocked every wisp of air from my lungs , and I lay there struggling to inhale, to exhale to do anything” (Page 20 - 21). Without the words like wisp, motionless and dozed this passage doesn’t have the same feeling of power, but with those words the quote is completely new and more powerful. Also, more evidence from the book could prove this even more. In this scene of the story the reaping has taken place, Katniss has been picked and is waiting eagerly for her partner to be chosen. In the book it says, “ I watch him as he makes his way toward the stage. Medium height, stocky build, ashy blond hair that falls in the waves over his forehead” (Page 25). This description shows how the book is more powerful than

I don't think the hunger games should be in the book because they kill innocent people, they could make people who win into murderers, and they would probably make people who win scared and have nightmares. In the book the hunger games has changed by.. In the beginning the hunger games the game makers really didn't get involved with putting things in the games. Towards the middle they started putting mutts and stuff into the games. Towards the end they started putting a lot of mutts in and a bunch of other deadly things.…

Often movies are made out of blockbuster books. Sometimes the movies do a good job of capturing the most important moments from the book and presenting them in the movie. Unfortunately, some movies do not always accurately depict the books they represent with full details. There are many reasons why a movie depiction of a book fails not least of which is because they are only given a couple of hours to tell the whole story in the book. A book is able to go in depth with the character’s emotions and experiences while a movie based on the book is limited by the length of the film.…

In the Hunger Games, the most important similarities the movie shared with the book was making Peeta initiate the idea of him and Katniss being lovers. This is so significant because, without this, most of the main events in the book and movie would never have taken place. For one, this angle would have left Katniss to be just another face in the crowd, not making her stand out, which also meant fewer sponsors, decreasing her chances of survival. However, the most important reason for this is because Katniss would have left Peeta to die when he needed her the most and she would not have been able to plant the small seeds of defiance against the capital. In the movie and novel, the games take a surprising turn when an announcement goes out that…

She is wracked with nerves for every interview and appearance she has to make in the lead up to the sadistic reality show but she puts on a smile and fights through it. Throughout the games, Katniss has the internal struggle of choosing between two things, her allies and friends she makes during the games or survival, which means getting back home to her sister Prim and her best friend Gale. At one point, Katniss even attempts to sacrifice herself and a friend in an act of rebellion against the cruel, vindictive President Snow that has supressed, starved and tortured the districts for 74 years.…

It seems an unfair view to expect a movie about a book to be exactly the same down to every single detail. Communities of fans will always find something wrong with a story, for it has “failed” to match expectation. Books are a place where someone can be dragged into the story and forget about everything else for a short while. Movies do the exact same thing, except it is seen as an easier way than books for a lot of people. Ignoring obvious differences (such as the fact that one is in picture form, and the other is in words), movies and books may not be so different after all.…
