The Hunger Games: Book Vs Movie

The award winning book The Hunger Games propelled the success of the film adaptation; however, the success of the film pales in comparison to the success of the book. Overall, the novel’s themes are translated better via paper. Through the written word, Suzanne Collins is able to successfully convey the complex themes in the book such as defiance and survival and dramatically communicate the characters’ emotions through a first-person perspective. The impacts of these elements are either eliminated or fall decidedly short in Gary Ross’ film version. Novels, which are usually superior to their film adaptations, allow readers to create a personal cinematic experience and interpretation in their mind’s eye. The limitations created by film are …show more content…
However, due to time constraints, the movie skims over or omits much of the book’s power symbolism as it relates to these themes. Todd McCarthy, a film critic, acknowledges the omission of themes but argues that the omissions do not detract from the story. He contends, “Director Gary Ross gets enough of what matters in the book up on the screen to satisfy its legions of fans worldwide” (McCarthy). Although Ross conveys general themes of survival and defiance, the underlying imagery that heavily shape the story, are stunted. Some of the omissions do not significantly impact the story, yet others are vital to the thrust of the story, in particular, the importance of the mocking-jay pin to the themes of survival and defiance.
The themes of defiance and survival are present in the movie, but the pin is not an integral element. The pin is introduced in the original Hunger Games book. Katniss wears a circular gold token mocking-jay pin during the Games to represent District 12. Each tribute is allowed a token to remind him or her of friends and family of their home district. Ross does not eliminate the pin from the movie, but he introduces it with minimal explanation, which underrates its significance. The history of the mocking jay is an account of how the bird came to symbolize defiance and

Collins wrote The Hunger Games in the first person, meaning that the teenage heroine explains her thoughts and motivations in her own words. The reader spends most of the story inside of her head experiencing events as she does as opposed to watching them. Movies are usually limited to visuals when telling a story. Without voice-over narrations, most of the emoting is left to the actor’s interpretation. In the Hunger Games film adaptation, Ross simply cannot convey the depth of emotion Collins is able to communicate through the written word. The first person account gives the reader additional insight into the main character’s thoughts, feelings, and motivations. Without understanding the motivation behind the character’s decisions, the movie falls short. While Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Katniss on screen, does an exceptional job of portraying Katniss, she unfortunately does not give full justice to the character and defining information is lost. Through Collins’ first person account, the reader gains access to anecdotes about District life through Katniss’ private thoughts and memories which help shape the world. The reader learns that survival is second nature to Katniss and gains an understanding of her

In the Change to the Big Screen “Film is a very, very powerful medium. It can either confirm the idea that things are wonderful the way they are, or it can reinforce the conception that things can be changed.” These words were taken from the award-winning filmmaker and author Wim Wenders, someone who appreciates how movies have a profound impact on all different types of people. Perhaps this is why the most powerful books are so often transferred to the screen, as is so with In the Heat of the Night, a book by John Ball.…

I was extremely excited to begin reading Mockingjay. After seeing the all of the movies, I was excited to see if the books were going to be like the movie. Katniss in the book and film series is a resilient character showing the bad things that have happened to her, but she still picks herself up and fights for what she believes in. Which is a powerful message for fans of the books and the films showing even the weakest can become the strongest. She was never meant to be a hero but became one as soon as she volunteered for her younger sister to save her from the horrors of the Hunger Games. She became a symbol of leadership and courage for fans of the…

“Survival of the fittest,” a quote made popular over the ages by pop culture and mainstream media. Many believed that Charles Darwin, a popular naturalist and geologist at the time, coined this quote due to the vast amounts of points and discoveries that he contributed to the theory of evolution, which was controversial during that time. Although this line has lost its true, intended meaning over the years, it’s still a vital component if a creature is to survive and thrive in nature. In the story “The Hunger Games,” the author, Suzanne Collins, narrates about a coming-of-age, post-apocalyptic story that targets human relationships and emotions between each other and the challenges that they have to face along the way. The way how each characters…

The 2012 film The Hunger Games , directed by Gary Ross, provides a complex and relevant commentary on contemporary social issues. The film is based on the 2008 novel of the same name written by Suzanne Collins and centres around a young girl trying to survive in a dystopian society. This is complicated by the annual event of “the hunger games”, where children must fight to the death in order to return home. The film examines ways in which the upper class are oblivious or at least choose to ignore the suffering of less fortunate lower classes, and also explores how upper classes benefit from and encourage the oppression of lower classes. Additionally, the film provides a contemporary portrayal of the female gender through the character of Katniss,…

Katniss is thrown unwillingly into the spotlight and made a celebrity for The Hunger Games. She is wracked with nerves for every interview and appearance she has to make in the lead up to the sadistic reality show but she puts on a smile and fights through it. Katniss is described by her mentor Haymitch as “sullen and hostile”. Throughout the games, Katniss has the internal struggle of choosing between two things, her allies and friends she makes during the games or survival, which means getting back home to her sister Prim and her best friend Gale. At one point, Katniss even attempts to sacrifice herself and a friend in an act of rebellion against the cruel, vindictive President Snow that has supressed, starved and tortured the districts for 74 years.…
