For she is fiercely protective of her younger sister Prim, and she volunteers to take her place in the Hunger Games to protect her. In fact, she is more responsible than anyone else for her family’s wellbeing. After her father’s death, her mother sank into a depression. Hence, she left Katniss to take care of the family despite her youthful age.. Because of the tough conditions in District 12 (starvation), Katniss has grown into a tough, unsentimental yet compassionate girl. Her sense of compassion remains intact is clear through the way she treats Rue. In fact, the only fear Katniss ever appears to feel is on others' behalf, illustrating the loyalty that also marks her as a heroine of the hills. This lack of change, however, is a triumph because she maintains her sense of identity and integrity despite the horrible ordeals she faces in the Games. Not only so, she is also resourceful since such an early age, for she has been her family's sole provider since her father's death. "I suppose now that my mother was locked in some dark world of sadness, but at the time, all I knew was that I had lost not only a father, but a mother as well" (The Hunger Games, p. 27). Katniss says this because she is aware that she was the only provider in the family, the one that kept it going. He was a raging alcoholic who did not seem to care whether they live or die in the arena meaning that he didn’t care about their fates. But readers learn that he is the only District 12 winner in the Hunger Games having won the 50th Quarter Quell when he was just 16. He drinks to manage with the trauma because he's watched 48 of his tributes before them die in the arena. Hence, he feels reluctant to get attached to both Katniss and Peeta. Katniss is convinced that Haymitch despises her and doesn’t try to contradict her. His teachings are the only things that help them through the Games. The main change in his character during the Games is the understanding that he has developed with Katniss. Throughout the games, they communicated through his timely gifts. When he didn't send much of them, he was secretly telling Katniss to play up the "love" act. As for his relationship with Peeta, they did not get off on the right foot, they fought each other on the train ride to the Capitol during the 74th Hunger Games. The two later work together often and become close with each other. Haymitch favored Peeta since he was very useful and charismatic. He admits that he likes Peeta better.
