The threshold occurs when Katniss arrives in the Capitol. At this point she is no longer in her known world of District 12. Katniss’ threshold guardian is Effie Trinket because Katniss would never have gone to the games if Effie had not picked Prim. Now that Katniss is out of her known world she can start her transformation.
At this stage in the journey Katniss is in the capitol and she must change her state of mind in order to survive, but she must not lose herself in the process. Eventually she decides she needs to take action against the careers and forms a plan to blow up their food. She blows up the food successfully, but when she returns she finds Rue dying. She then covers her body in flowers and sings her to sleep. This is impotent because it starts an uprising in district 11 where rue is from and will help her deal with Thresh. Her next challenge is to get medicine for Peeta. She gets the medicine for Peeta and brings it back. This is important because it leaves only 4 players left. The abyss for Katniss is when she and Peeta are the final tributes. The game makers had made an announcement stating that if two people from the same district were left they could both win. In the beginning of the novel, Katniss endures the pain of losing her home District 12, which is now turned into ashes. The ashes symbolize the destruction of the lives and the homes caused by the Capitol’s regime. In addition, the setting of the novel in District 13 and in the Capitol parallels the totalitarian governments, in which Katniss is forced to stage propaganda and promote false truths as her role similar to the role she played during the Hunger Games. Both governments kill innocent children, exploit their subjects, control and manipulate people, stage media, and desire power. Although District 13 is more or less the good side of the war, it is no different than the Capitol through its control and deception.…
