Human Service Field Reflection Paper

There is a saying used in the human service field to describe a person someone who unfortunately was forgotten by their case manager or helper due to overwhelming priority cases and other work stressors. The saying is “falling through the crack of the system”, and this relates to me because I was almost that child. The child who became lost in the system and almost becoming that child scared the hell out of me very much. Growing up in a dysfunctional household with a mom who had no clear direction on how to parent due to her upbringing affected her raising me and my siblings. It mostly affected how we were disciplined, in her mind abusing us physically and verbally was ok at the time because that how she was raised. It did not matter how small …show more content…
After she cut my hair and beat me she said” now you don’t have to worry about any boys looking at you.” After that situation I really felt like she hated me and was so disgusted because she would not talk to me let alone look at me. Feeling alone and embarrassed were two feelings I felt all the time while I lived with her. In the end I was the one who called children services on her so that she could be stopped. Experiencing all of this made me pursue social work, but it scared me away from working in the child welfare system or with kids in general. At one point in time I felt it would be too overwhelming for me because of what I experienced in my childhood. Having all those experiences made me feel helpless and that is something I never wanted to feel again, and it also is what motivates me to receive a master’s level education. Advocating is such a big part of social worker and I feel with a MSW I will be able to reach a wider scale of people. Working on a macro level puts a person in contact with more advanced learning materials for social worker, and can provide more resources on a larger …show more content…
Educating the members of the community on health insurance is needed as well, lack of knowledge can create a lot confusion with health insurance policies. If a person does not know the ins and outs of their current policy, then one may feel as if they are not getting their money’s worth or adequate services for that matter. Making sure there is communication on both ends with the provider and client is important as well. Another factor is that some may not ask enough questions or none at all. Coming up with a plan to prep clients on what needs to be discussed with health care providers to insurance he/she is the getting the most out of the services. Another option is actually reaching out to people who work for the insurance companies, talking with them one on one or in a group. Getting everyone’s views/opinions of the policies and why they feel so many people are uninsured. Putting together a plan of action to raise awareness on the issue because this has been an ongoing
