In this article, Underwood, et al. (2015) focused on the concepts of perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, and perceived barriers. Perceived susceptibility refers to a person’s attitude surrounding how likely they believe their child will contract HPV. Perceived severity denotes how serious the individual views HPV. Perceived benefits are an individual’s belief that by getting the HPV vaccine their child will not contract the cancer causing virus. A perceived barrier of the HPV vaccine is time allotted for communication between doctor and patient about the vaccine. This intervention accomplished that goal. Across all three arms of the intervention the odds ratio increased for parents reporting their child had received the initial dose of the HPV vaccine. Moreover, researchers also found that adolescent females were three times as likely to receive the initial HPV vaccine compared to adolescent males, and were also more likely to complete all three doses.
