From the beginning, Rudolfo Anaya sets up his novel, Bless Me Ultima, with an unconventional chronology. Unlike most children, milestones in Antonio’s age are quietly acknowledged, and the passage of time is merely in the background. But although a child’s growth is typically measured by the passage of time, the novel shows the growth of Antonio in a wholly different way; that is, Antonio grows as he gains knowledge about his own spirituality. More specifically, he discovers that the most central element of his development is comprehending, and accepting, the role that forgiveness and punishment should play in his relationship with God.…

My favorite exhibit was in the BYU Museum, “To magnify the Lord: Six Centuries of Art and Devotion”. This exhibit was full of paintings, and artwork representing the life of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The religious artwork in this exhibit displays beautiful narratives of Christ’s life, and his ministry. All of the paintings in this exhibit relate back to the Savior, and they really emphasize the greatness, and the mercy of the Lord, and many of them portray events that occurred during his life. In this exhibit, I really like the painting by James T. Harwood, “Come Ye After Me”.…

Papa Roach’s song Scars talks about is about putting yourself out there even though you’ve been hurt and having someone use you and never take the blame. The speaker is saying that he continuously hurts himself to save the other and he cannot prevent the pain because he is just naturally a compassionate man although the downfall of others drag him down as well. “Scars” carries the theme that at some point sacrifice can be too much and you can’t always save everyone or they can drag you with them. In the lines, “I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut, My weakness is that I care too much, And our scars remind us the past is real,”(Shaddix 13-15) the theme is shown to the listener that this person has suffered many injuries, emotionally speaking, and cares too much about people that only bring him pain and more injury.…

As I write the above poem, I reflect on my time at my first ADTA conference, the words of a Billie Holiday song, Why Not Take All of Me, come to mind. In this song, she speaks very candid about a man taking her heart due to a breakup and decides that it is best to take her life since one has taken the better part of her. For me, in this journey of therapy and Counseling, as an African American, one of my strongest assets is that I am a black man. As it is who I am, providing a very specific lens for which I see the world. Being my unauthentic self, (which has been the more accepted version of myself), has been the aching thorn in my back.…
