In the early 1980 's in the U.S. the CDC started noticing rare and unusual diseases in young men in New York and California ("A Timeline of AIDS"). June 9, 1981 the MMWR reported five young men had Pneumocystis Pneumonia (PCP) in Los Angeles, two had died prior publishing of the weekly report ("A Timeline of AIDS"). In New York City, health officials started noticing Kaposi 's Sarcoma (KS) cancerous spots a disease most commonly in older Italian men among young, otherwise healthy men ("A Timeline of AIDS"). The common thread was these men were homosexual and/or IV drug users according to These are the first recognized cases of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) now referred to as the AIDS pandemic, but then it was called the gay cancer("A Timeline of AIDS"). AIDS is a condition caused by Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), but we wouldn 't know this for years to come. The history of this virus and condition are tainted by discrimination and ignorance, however, this virus has forced many to talk openly about sex and transmittable diseases.
The early 80 's were a scary period for gay men, young men were dying by the handfuls. The scare was real and all that was understood is this syndrome was affecting the immune system.
