New resources and research have made contributions to the science of genomes and disease. Some of the contributions include, early testing, risk factors, and aiding in prevention. All of these factors influence healthcare and patients. Each person can …show more content…
Some of these downfalls could include problems with insurance, as well as discrimination. If a person is found to have a disease, such as Huntington’s disease, then they could lose their job, and or insurance may lower coverage or even reject any coverage. Challenges within this program could also be social issues of the family dynamics changing, if results are positive for tests such as cancer. An additional risk of having genes testes are “the genes they do detect may present different risks to different people and populations” (Human Genome Primer). By saying this, more than one family member could test positive for the gene, but in the future the disease may only affect one of them or could have resulted as a false positive. Another problem that could be faced are people being misled by media. The media has a “representation that may involve exaggeration, called ‘genohype’” (Hype). Another issue with this specific project is cost, and whether it is reported in the media or not (Hype). Not all people are in tune with media, therefore they do not hear proper risks or truth, and when deciding to listen to any media, they could believe anything they hear. One of the issues the media does not portray is what happens when a person does test positive and if there are treatments are available. The new things are being able to test a gene that has not been tested before, but who is to say what will happen to …show more content…
Gene therapy is where “genes themselves to treat disease or enhance particular traits” (Human Genome Project and Beyond). The use of gene transfer could enhance the fight to cure cancer or even AIDS. The research says that “normal genes supplement or replace the defective genes to bolster a normal function such as immunity” (cite). Although this aspect of the project needs to undergo more research, I believe when it has any success, the media will ensure the population and more people will think of it as a social
