Jim Rohn once stated, “Take care of your body. It 's the only place you have to live.” The human body is made up of trillions of cells that grow, reproduce, and die constantly. Our cells are directed by DNA, which can be damaged at times due to copying errors during replication and environmental agents such as smoke. In most cases, the DNA will eventually be repaired or the cell will die on its own. However, there are cases where the cell with damaged DNA will continue to reproduce and not die like it should. These cells will continue to make more unneeded cells and spread to other parts of the body. When this occurs, the person has contracted a form of cancer. Cancer is a relevant issue in our society. In 2010, 1.6 million people in the United States were living in the diagnosis of cancer, and it will be expected to rise to 2.3 million people in 2030. Also according to recent estimates, approximately 40 percent of Americans will contract cancer and half of these people will die from it. Thus, while cancer can’t be cured, it is important to understand cancer to prevent it before it starts. The oldest description of cancer was discovered in Egypt and dates back to 3000 BC. Known as the Edwin Smith Papyrus, it describes 8 cases of cauterized breast tumors, a process in which a part of the body is burned to remove that section.
