“The House was Quiet and the World was Calm” describes how I feel when I am home alone. With the house to myself, I am free from the noise of the blaring T.V, constant ringing and vibrating of cell phones, and loud voices. It is then when I usually pursue activities that require quiet, usually reading or relaxing. The sense of peace that overcomes me as I am alone in the house allows for intense focus. When I am alone and reading, I can immerse myself in the text. Stevens writes the “reader became the book” when “the house was quiet and the world was calm.” History is my favorite topic to read for entertainment, especially American history, and when I have the opportunity to travel back in time through the words on the page, and the house
