There are various meanings of “Identity” in the world. Identity is “people’s concepts of who they are, of what sort of people they are, and how they relate to others” (Hogg and Abrams 1988, 2). Most of my identity is made up of people around me in my life and environment that I grew up. From “My Name Masaki,” I had hated my name due to kind of gender discrimination in Japan until I met a woman who has the same name as me. At that time, I broke out of my routine that I used to have and realized that it does not matter about the difference of gender in names. In both “Smile and Crooked Teeth” and “Value of Food Gratitude,” I introduced my family who make me different from others. Especially among general households in Japan, my parents are strict about manners to teach me how to behave politely. Currently, how my parents raised me is useful both in society and in daily life, and I got it through my head that my parent’s strict rule was for my own benefit. In my life, family is the most important for me, and I really love them. “My First Part-time Job” is the story after I came to the U.S. without family.
