An Exercise in Embarrassment A few years ago, over Spring break I went on a week-long vacation to Washington DC with my family. This included, my mother, father, sister and my mother’s sister and brother along with their respective families. Over a period of four days we walked over sixty miles and I got to visit some of the most extraordinary places I could ever imagine. Standing at the proverbial head of the table was the Lincoln Memorial, a magnificent cross section of history and reverence with a dash of classical architecture for good measure.…

The crowds gathered down Chestnut Street to celebrate my return. Well, not specifically mine, but the soldiers that made it home from the “Great War”. It was a pleasant experience against the bloodshed massacre in Europe known as WW1. The trench warfare was filled with death and sickness, but this, the bright clean faces upon the residents of Philadelphia, they were the best thing I’d seen in half a year, ever since I was deployed in in Austria-Hungary. I did noticed a few different things, besides the fact my little brother lost his first tooth and my father grew his beard out, it did seem different.…

Visiting the Holocaust Center was such a great privilege to have, even though a lot of the things that were on display may have been difficult to look at. Remembering those that died during the Holocaust helped me to stay strong because I know that there were people that couldn’t do that. Learning about that terrible time in history is hard for so many people, but we do it in remembrance and commemoration for those that we lost. There were many things on display that were just simple enough to leave a deeper, more difficult impression. One of those displays being a large portrait of Adolf Hitler that sat, staring, in a dark hall.…

There were a million places I would have rather been (hyperbole), but I was there, in our nation’s capitol, gazing up at the towering Washington Monument. I was a 16-year-old girl about to spend a week of her summer in Washington D.C. learning about the founding fathers of America and dreading every minute of it. My family was going to take our trip to D.C. two summers ago, but my sister and I convinced my parents that it would not be enjoyable if we had to drive rather than fly. Last summer, however, my parents overruled their crabby teenage daughters and we made the 18-hour drive to D.C. Instead of taking our 1998, untrustworthy, white minivan on this long trip, my grandparents allowed us to drive their 2014 minivan instead. My parents…

Back on those old days, I have had plenty of good memories, as well as just as many bad ones, in middle school and high school.
