A bildungsroman is a type of novel that deals with a person’s formative years or goes on a journey of self-discovery in which the character (usually the protagonist) will gain personal growth as the novel progresses. This kind of novel is usually centered on a child protagonist like in The House on Mango Street or The Bluest Eyes. A Katherine Bell puts it in her dissertation; the bildungsroman is “often referred to as a novel of education” and began in the seventeenth century “as a literary offshoot of educational theory” (Bell 1).
