Cisneros shows the character’s perspectives through figurative language. In the middle of the story, Esperanza and her siblings were talking about her aunt’s disease and Esperanza describes her aunt as “a little oyster, a little piece of meat on an open shell” (60). In other words, she thinks that her aunt is just something to look at. This shows that Esperanza has no sympathy for others because she is mean to her aunt who has a terrible disease.
