Mark Haddon once said, “Reading is a conversation. All books talk. But a good book listens as well.” Although, there are many children adventure books, The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cineros is the best by far. The book is intriguing, funny, heart-warming and full of adventure. The book paints a vivid picture of Esperanza and her family living in their new house on Mango Street. Sadly, the house doesn’t meet up to Esperanza’s expectations but Esperanza learns to adjust to new home.The character of Esperanza in The House on Mango Street expresses the difficulty, adventure, friendships, and maturity in her lifestyle.

In the book, pg. Esperanza and Nenny are together always on Mango Street visiting new places. First, they walk into a dark, small junk store owned by an old black man. In the junk store, Esperanza and Nenny found used refrigerators, box of magazines, televisions, and all sorts of junk. Esperanza and Nenny didn’t really find anything interesting in the store, except a music box which is not for sale. Then, Esperanza plays volleyball with her brother’s friend, Louie and his family. While playing volleyball, Louie’s cousin drove up in a big yellow Cadillac with white walls, soft cushioned seats, and a yellow scarf tied around the window. Everyone gathered around the car asking for rides and questions about the car. Louie’s cousin drove everyone around the alley seven times until he hears the cops following him. Louie’s cousin stop the car and tells everyone to get out. Louie’s cousin crashes the car by trying to escape the cops and gets arrested. Lastly, Esperanza travels to see Elenita, a witch woman. Esperanza came there to see if there is a beautiful house in her future. Elenita reads her palm, summons the spirits, and closes her eyes to see into Esperanza’s future. Elenita told Esperanza that there is a home in the heart. Esperanza doesn’t understand what Elenita means by a home in the heart. Esperanza is willing dance with everyone in front of everyone at a baptism party. There was dancing, music, tamales, and children running around the place. Then, her Uncle Nacho came over to dance with her. Everyone is watching Minerva and her uncle graciously dance across the dance floor. When their done dancing, everyone applauds them and they take their bow. Esperanza has developed hips and understands the science the female body. Esperanza and her friends play a game double-dutch and making a lullaby about hips. Then, Maria has gotten her first job. Her aunt, Aunt Lala found a job for her at her job, Peter Pan Photo Finishers. Esperanza received the job right on the spot and started that same day. Esperanza found the job really easy. Her job was to wear gloves and match the negatives with the prints. Esperanza was scared to eat lunch with all the workers at the job. She would eat in the coatroom. Esperanza is now writing a lot. She is writing poems and reading books. Esperanza is learning to express herself through writing. Then, Esperanza met Minerva who is a little older than her. She is a single mother of two kids and occasionally her husband comes back home to see her. Minvera writes poems and she is always sad. Esperanza and Minerva usually sit and read each other’s poems together.As Esperanza progresses through life, she learns she is special. She learns that she is Mango Street. 4006
