The story takes place in the depression era and Esperanza was a wealthy young girl who lived on her families grape vineyard. Her father was murdered right before her thirteen birthday and changed Esperanza’s life forever. Esperanza and her mother made the tough decision to flee from her Tio Luis and to immigrate to the United States to be migrant workers. In California, Esperanza matures and has hardships through the migrant worker strikes and her mother’s illness.

Everyone has a job at the camp in fields or in the sheds. Esperanza is to stay at the cabin and take care of the twins and do household chores. Isabel, Miguel’s younger cousin shows Esperanza around camp and teachers her how to domestic duties for both families. Las Almendras begins with the ending of the first day of work and everyone is exhausted. Esperanza is given a special gift from Miguel and his father, rose clippings they planted from her rose garden in Mexico that she shared with her papa. Saturdays are the days for the Jamaica; everyone gets cleaned up to attend. Marta as well is at the Jamaica and is encouraging the others to strike for better conditions and pay. In the Las Ciruelas Esperanza burns the food and makes the babies sick by feeding them plums. After a few days Esperanza gets the hang of the things, and is settling in. There is a huge dust storm and Esperanza keeps herself and the babies’ safe in the cabin, but the works in the fields and the ladies in the shed are exposed to the dust storm.
