The House On Mango Street By Sandra Cisneros

In life people have something that is holding them back. It is how they choose to react that makes them who they are. In the novella The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Esperanza goes through many challenges and poverty only makes them harder. The novella is about a girl named Esperanza. She lives in a Mexican neighborhood with her family. They do not have much money so that causes many conflicts throughout the novella. The novella starts when she is younger and shows some problems that she faced throughout her life. The circle is an important symbol in The House on Mango Street, representing ways that many characters are trapped in a cycle of violence and poverty as well as the ways a community can help break that cycle. The vignette “Martin” shows that Martng is trapped in this ongoing circle. Throughout the story Cisneros shows how people are trapped in a circle of poverty, and they can not get out. One example, when Cisneros writes, “someone to change her life” (Cisneros 27). This quote shows that she is trapped in a big circle and she is waiting for someone to get her out. Throughout the vignette Alicia wants to go pursue other things in life, but poverty is holding her back. Cisneros writes. “Studies all night and sees the mice” (Cisneros 32). At first glance it seems that this quote means nothing. However after looking closer, it shows that Alicia is studying all night. Studying all night shows that she is trying to get out of where she is right now to try bigger and better things. Also the mice symbolize poverty. They symbolize poverty because Alicia’s dad can not see them. He cannot see them because he has been in poverty his whole life and does not know any different. However Alicia can see them because it is poverty that is holding her back from her
