“The House on Mango Street” written by Sandra Cisneros, narrated in the point of view of a child, suggests an imaginary, simple and hopeful tone throughout the story, creating a sense of pathos and ethos. The child dreams of a perfect house. A house with “real stairs”, a “basement”, “at least three washrooms” and a “fence [that] would be white” (Cisneros, 223). The child dreams of a house that he/she has not lived in yet, and a place where he/she feels comfortable, content, and safe. The narrator’s parents tell and his/her siblings “that [they] would move into a house, a real house, that would be [theirs] for always so [they] wouldn’t have to move each year” (Cisneros, 223).
