In “The House of Usher” it is told by a narrator. Although he never gives his name or describes his appearance in any detail, but plays a significant role in the whole story. He starts off by receiving a letter from his dear friend Roderick Usher, and it is saying that he has some kind of illness and he hopes that he can help. He feels uneasy at the particular Mansion saying it is gloomy. “I know not how it was-but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit.”(103) The narrator started off just riding horseback to the Mansion while stopping at a small river for his horse. He could tell that something about this place was amiss. Just like Edgar Allan Poe 's other works, he described things that weren’t named yet. After The narrator talked to his friend Mr. Usher, he realized that he could only wear certain fabrics, a high sense of smell, and was very sensitive to light. Usher says the only thing that would be worse than death is being alive while his sister passes away. That would leave him to be the last usher in a long ancient line. While saying this his sister who is known as lady Madeline, slowly walked by in the distance. Looking lonely and half dead. All the narrator wanted to do was help this family so he decides to stay a few nights in hopes of gathering information. He later learned that his sister also had some strange disease. A settled apathy, her body wasting away. A strange disease that no doctor could figure out. (Although now it is known as Catalepsy) The narrator once said after seeing Madeline walk away that the small glimpse he saw just for a few seconds was the last since later on she is buried, presumed dead..”(108) Meaning that little did he know that the first time he saw her would be the last time he saw her
