Ghosts, Spirits and Witches
For this essay, I chose to discuss the idea of Ghosts, Spirts and Witches or the recurring theme of the Supernatural playing an important part of the novels I plan on discussing throughout, specifically, ‘The House of the Spirts’. I chose this theme since this was the theme I found most prominent throughout, ‘The House of the Spirts’, the main novel I’ll be discussing, hence the title, since Clara’s home really did become a house dominated by spirits. In ‘The Woman Warrior” it is the idea of ghosts, specifically ancestral ghosts that appear to be considered a normal part of their cultural beliefs. The idea of ghosts in this novel is an ever recurring motif used in a variety of ways, referring to both American and Chinese, humans and animals, the living and the dead. Though in comparison to ‘The House of Spirts’ which really only showed ‘good ghosts’, there can be seen malevolent ghosts in the ‘The Woman Warrior”, as seen with the "sitting ghost". Though their can also be seen as ‘helpful or good’ such as the ancestral ghosts that look after the living and everyday ghosts that do what everyday ghosts do, such as the "newsboy ghost”, clearly defining these ghosts as a normal part of everyday life. Even Kingston after hearing a great number of her mother’s talk-stories is unable to decipher what’s real from what’s imagined, for example the question as to whether her mother really had a mentally retarded boy follow her around or whether, or is he just another ghost, a creation of her …show more content…
Superstition, magic and mysticism make up a large portion of this culture, as well as many other cultures around the world.
