“The House of the Scorpion” created by Nancy Farmer is an exhilarating story that should be read by many people in multiple grade levels.
The setting takes places in a country called Opium in a large property called the Alacrán Estate. Opium is in a strip of poppy fields in between the USA and what used to be called Mexico.
Matteo Alacrán (Matt) is a clone that was harvested from the womb of a cow after being made in a petri dish. Matt is a clone of El Patrón the lord of the country, Opium.
Matt was born from a cow womb, but does not know that so he lives with Celia one of the maids for the Alacrán estate. One day Matt meets two kids who he later identifies as Steven and Emilia. The two kids want him to come outside and play with them, but Matt can’t come out

Later Steven, Emilia, and María a young near Matts age, and they want to play with Matt again so Matt tries to do thing behind the glass, but decides he wants to leave so he throws a cooking pot at the glass and jumps out and onto the glass. The kids carry him to the Alacrán estate to be treated until they find out he is a clone. They throw him out, but then lock him up and treat him poorly. Tom harrases him, but finally El patrón hears of him and has Matt brought to him. El patrón wants Matt treated better and to be healed due to being Malnourished and being hurt. El patrón leaves and has Matt choose one of his bodyguards to stay with him. Matt chooses Tam Lin. Matt is starting to be treated better, but everyone still does not like the idea of a clone being allowed in the estate freely. Matt is homeschooled, but doesn’t like it so they send his work out. Tam Lin brings Matt to a secret area, but before that Matt learns what an Eejit is and feels bad for the one that died in the field. Matt lives in the state for seven years until he finds out about what he is. Matt is taken to a hospital
