Have you ever been hooked on to a book? The book that forces you to read on? There are many ways author’s do this in stories. In the book “The House of the Scorpion”, Nancy Farmer uses a flashback to provide background information, build suspense, and to get the reader predicting.
First this is the transition between chapter one and two,“Have I done you a favor? Thought Eduardo as he watched the baby turn its head toward the bustling nurses in their starched, white uniforms. Will you thank me for it later?”(Farmer 4) .“Matt stood in front of the door and spread his arms to keep Celia from leaving.”(Farmer 5). Using suspense gets the reader to read on and find out what is next. The reader gets curious to find out the conclusion or solution is to the event. Nancy ended the first chapter with this, “Will you thank me for it later?”. This leaves a mysterious mood and leaves the reader with many questions. Thank him for what? Why is this being done? Any other other questions from this chapter may make the reader curious to read on.
Also, Nancy Farmer uses a flashback to get the reader predicting. To finish the first chapter and start the second like Nancy did, it leaves readers questioning and predicting what is going to happen next. Nancy probably used this to get the readers to keep reading the book. To have the reader get interested and to read on to find out what happens next. This is a unique craft move that is useful in this story and any other story.
Although, someone else could interpret this craft move as a way the author used to introduce the characters.The problem with this claim is that the flashback does not introduce all the characters.
