Helping people doesn't bring justice at all the time. Most people like to help each other, especially when they believe these people are really in need of that help since they have unfair situations. In the novel, the house of sand and fog, it is obvious that Lester is typically a pipeline over providing justice. Since he feels responsible for Kathy’s situation, he tries to help her in order to provide justice and prove his manhood, “Lester began to feel as inauthentic a man as was possible, living in a marriage he no longer felt, working as a law enforcer when he’d never been able to face any man down on his own, to serve or protect anyone without the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department behind him” (Dubus III, page 240).
