When Kronus was overthrown by his children, the Earth was divided to each of his three sons. Zeus got the land, Poseidon got the sea, and Hades got the luck of the draw with the Underworld. Hades rules the underworld with his queen, Persephone, whom he abducted through deception and by feeding her the forbidden fruit of pomegranate. Which forced her to remain with him for at least one third of the year. The house of Hades is guarded by Cerberus, a three-headed dog, that guards the gates of the Underworld to keep the dead from leaving. Once the souls arrived at the gates, three judges: Minos, Rhadamanthys, and Aiakos, would determine what their final destination was based of how well they lived their lives. Hades would often supervisor the trial and punishment of the wicked once they were dead. The god was also believed to lead souls down the river of Styx and hand them off to the boatman, Charon. He normally wasn’t one of the judges of the Underworld or part of the torturing process in the deepest part of Hades. But according to greek stories, he never seemed to emerge from the underworld, even in his abduction of Persephone. Although he was a god, he seemed to prefer the underworld and hardly ever left his kingdom. Unlike a lot of gods, Hades only wife was Persephone and as far as myths go, he stayed faithful to her. Although he was considered an infertile god, he had three children: Zagreos, the god of Orphic mysteries, Melinoe, the goddess of ghosts, and Makaria, the goddess of the blessed dead. His weapons of choice include a pitchford, which he uses to create earthquakes, and a helmet of invisibility, which was a gift from the cyclops. He usually appears as a heavily bearded man with a scepter in his hand.
