Hotspot Writing Reflection

Throughout the course, I have realized, there is so much more to academic writing that I could ever imagined but more importantly, it’s not as hard as I once thought it was- that is, if one takes the necessary preparations. To begin with, the writing process deserves a lot of thought and it is not something one can do in one night. Up until this class, I barely made rough drafts however, now I can not picture writing anything without a rough draft. I have realized that it is a great way to organize my thoughts and make revisions towards my final piece. Also, the heuristics given to us seemed like a bore at the time, but I remember doing my analysis paper, I referred to the sheet often to jot down my major points. Additionally, hotspots …show more content…
For instance, in this assignment, I examined the correlation of nakedness and power or dominance, in which I never thought actually corresponded. These assignments made me think and while I probably didn’t enjoy doing them when I got home late at night and begun homework, I realized their importance as I wrote my essay because there were moments when I was stuck however if I referred back to these assignments, I could get back on track and continue to write on my topic. Additionally, for my argument paper, I even ran an experiment to further my exploration on the topic of the sexulization of a Latina. To get hands on with my topic and see information for myself truly helped me to see that there is depth to any topic and analyzing the information can come in handy when addressing the topic. Lastly, In the beginning of the year, I was not very organized in the process of writing, however now, I am more confident that with the proper planning, I develop as a writer and can write more effectively. I now know that a good piece of academic writing will not come …show more content…
The assignment I have benefited the most from throughout the entire course has to be our work with the dove ads. I believed what helped me most in my writing was the worksheet “Evolving Thesis: Dove’s Campaign for Real Beauty Ads”. Before this assignment I didn’t really know how to apply the five analytical moves to a picture or more generally, however as we as a class began to dissect the image and using the first step of notice and focus, it all began to come together- the method actually made sense. For instance, one of the things we’ve noticed as a class was the text in the advertisement that said “embrace ALL definitions of beauty”, which led us to believe that Dove was attempting to redefine the standard image of femininity beauty however upon further analysis with different advertisements, our claim or thesis changed based upon information we have discovered. For example, the third advertisement claimed to fix “problem areas” (notice and focus), which implies that being normal, in this case having cellulite, is a problem (making the implicit explicit), which led the entire class to reevaluate our initial thoughts about the dove advertisements and that while the ads attempt to expand what defines beauty, it still restricts this definition. Doing this assignment aided me in showing me exactly how one can arrive at a new thesis from an initial one. In my argument

Well known for her research and publications on student writing, Nancy Sommers—now Harvard’s Expository Writing Program Director—discusses the student’s revision strategies on her journal College Composition and Communication: a compilation of some of her articles. Throughout this essay, I will be focusing on three articles from Nancy 's journal: Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers (1980) with Laura Saltz as cowriter, Between the Drafts (1992), and the Novice as Expert (2004). Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers (1980) juxtaposes through a case study the revision strategies of first-year college students and experienced writers. Between the Drafts (1992) narrates her personal experience with revision strategies. The Novice as Expert: Writing the freshmen (2004) examines how first-year college students—Sommers believes— should approach writing.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

As I strided strong through my analysis paper, I saw how much I have improved throughout this year in writing. Although, I have many weaknesses and strengths in writing I managed to finish off this paper strong. In my analysis, my introduction went well and so did my thesis. I managed to develop both of them right off the bat once I started my paper. Another part that went was the interview with a field agronomist.…

One of the most important thing I have learned in this course that has positively affected my confidence in my writing skills is the concept of writing a “shitty first draft”. In my midterm self-assessment, I discussed how I thought I was among one of the unlucky ones that was not blessed with natural writing skills. However, through class discussions, I’ve learned that one of the most important competent of professional writing is the need for constant revision. Contrary to popular believe, writing does not come easy to anyone. In order to successfully produce professional writing, it is important that one plan, draft, revise, and edit his or her work.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

When I considered taking WRTG 101 this semester I was unsure how much it would affect my writing style. I have always had issues with the strength of my writing and my overall writing style. After taking this class I have an improved overall understanding of the writing process and how to apply it in different writing situations. This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed.
